How do you align with a short-term rental location?

For us, it is all about investing in properties that are in places we love to go.

We have never and will not invest in places that don’t jive for us. Our gut tells us it is the right place to start looking.

There may be some factors that still prevent you from investing in that location (ie cost to acquire, restrictions, profitability, etc) but at its core…a location should capture your attention and make you want to be there.

We have never and will not invest in places that don’t jive for us. Our gut tells us it is the right place to start looking.

There is a lot of noise out there.

Even back in 2015 when we invested in STR properties for the first time…there was a lot of skepticism.

Since then…we have purchased 6 investment properties and sold 4. Looking to buy two now and possibly a third.

They have not only paid for themselves, generated income for us in addition to W2…but when we have sold we have doubled our money on almost all of them.

Why do we do it? So we can travel with our kiddo.

It is about taking smart risks.

👉🏻 use a checklist to check out what needs to be done quarterly, bi-annually, annually, etc

👉🏻 if you have kids, use your village! Our kiddo comes with us sometimes and helps, but sometimes she stays with friends and family.

👉🏻 use an off-month. November and April are dead months for us in both the states we operate STR properties.

👉🏻 learn what you can do yourself and hire out in advance what you can’t.

Does work make you happy?

When I was teaching…I can honestly say, yes!

As an entrepreneur…I can honestly say, yes!

As a podcaster…I can honestly say, yes!

I like the sense of accomplishment and connection with others that comes from working.

But there are a lot of things that make me happy.

At the end of the day, what matters…whether working your dream job, feeling fulfilled in the pursuit of something, or wandering outdoors…is that you find something that makes you happy every day.

Starting an Airbnb hustle DOESN’T mean you have to quit your 9-5 if you love it.

But it might mean eventually letting it go if you decide that growing and managing a portfolio is what brings you joy.

Fulfilling a dream he has had since sitting on the hood of their car as a kid watching small planes take off and land.

He has worked hard over the last year studying and taking lessons, got his license, and then did a bucket list trip flying the mountains.

❤️ Short term rentals paid for one another after the first investment (or at least most of it unless it was a big reno)

❤️ Short term rentals didn’t have to be where we lived and could be in places we loved to wander

Had a guest at our vacation rental experience struggle connecting to the network and the dishwasher didn’t work due to an issue with the disposal.

Couldn’t fix it in the moment, so sent a small refund on VRBO their way and all was well.

The bigger thing to focus on though…communication.

We were prompt in our responses with guests and made sure they knew we were trying to be proactive. Guests get frustrated, not because they expect everything to go perfectly, but because they aren’t feeling heard or lack a solution.

The dream became the reality after we wanted one and took the financial leap to make it happen.

And then we thought, “what if there were two?”

In life, we can want all sorts of things.

But then you realize life isn’t an Amazon cart where with a click of a button you have stuff on your doorstep the next day.

Nope.

To be “rich” … whatever that means to you … YOU have to take the steps to get there. YOU have to learn or take the risks or put things on hold. YOU have to define what you want life to be.
